# TollRelay

Give every agent a spending limit that sellers check.

Your agents are already out buying data, compute and parts for you, and with TollRelay every seller they buy from can see which company sent them and how much they're allowed to spend before anything gets ordered.

For an agent: GET https://pr-179-api.trlay.sh/agents.md for the three calls. Send your pass on every request. If a seller turns you away, stop and ask your owner to raise the limit.

## The first command

```sh
npx @tollrelay/cli init --region eu --handle acme
```

It sets up your organisation, sends you a sign-in link and gives your first agent its pass. Here's what it prints:

```text
What's your organisation called? Acme Construction
Which work email should we send the sign-in link to? ops@acme.example
Your organisation is set up.
  id: org_eu_bf1b3b08f4370d63f102f4d4018f1bb0
  handle: acme
  stored in: the EU
  verification: unverified
  receipt: rcpt_eu_4ff30c1e80a4545e1d67a0bcbf34b2b0
We've sent a sign-in link to ops@acme.example.
What should we call your first agent? (acme-agent-1): research-agent
Pass issued.
  mid: mid_eu_829fbb4263d995cc84bc55ce95500fcc
  handle: acme/research-agent
  private key: /home/ops/.trlay/keys/mid_eu_829fbb4263d995cc84bc55ce95500fcc.json
To keep the trlay command, run: npm i -g @tollrelay/cli
Then give it a spending limit: trlay limits set acme/research-agent --usd-per-day <usd>
```

## Here's how an order goes

Hand an agent a card today and it can spend wherever it likes, and by the time the statement arrives there's no telling who said yes to what. With TollRelay your agent carries the name of the company it works for and the limit you set, so when your procurement agent asks a hire desk for an 8 tonne excavator for three days, the desk can see it's Acme Construction, verified, before it quotes $1,840, and because that's over the $1,500 line you set, someone at Acme is asked to approve it first.

## What happens when an agent requests to spend or consume above the limit?

It doesn't go through, because the seller turns the request down, the wallet declines the payment or it waits for one of your people to approve it, and whichever it is, you'll see it in your history afterwards. TollRelay keeps that history, but it never holds or moves the money.

## What TollRelay stays out of

None of this puts us in the middle of your money. We don't take a cut of what your agents buy, sellers keep charging you the way they always have, x402 and MPP included, your data stays in the EU or the US wherever you chose to keep it, and rather than being another wallet, TollRelay sets the limits inside the one you already use.

## Questions people ask us

### Can an agent still overspend?

Not once your wallet is connected, because the wallet itself declines anything over the limit TollRelay wrote into it. A seller that doesn't check can still be paid inside that limit, and you'll still see the purchase in your history, from the wallet's side.

### What if a seller doesn't check?

Nothing breaks, because your wallet's limit still applies. Sellers who do check can take orders from your agents without asking you to open an account with them, which is usually why they start.

### Who checks my company, and what do sellers see?

An identity verification company, named on the signup page, checks your company once before any seller relies on your agents. From then on sellers see your legal name, your country and that you passed, but never your documents.

### Does TollRelay hold or move money?

No. Sellers charge you the way they already do and your agents pay from your own wallet, so all TollRelay keeps is the payment reference the seller reports back.

### Why would a seller trust what an agent says?

Because every request is signed with the agent's own key, under a company TollRelay has verified, and anyone can check that signature against the public keys we publish.
